Del Mecum Sr.

Del Mecum Sr. founded Underground Contractors, Inc. back in 1973. Building a dedicated team was his top priority, but it was no easy task. However, Del’s natural inclination for mentoring and his passion for teaching allowed him to form a group of exceptional underground, aerial, splicing, and engineering experts spanning several regions and states. The members of UCI’s team share a common set of values that Del instilled in the company, including family, hard work, honesty, and a commitment to quality. No matter the age or time spent with him, every employee can attest to the positive energy that Del brought to the office. He was a leader who genuinely cared, listened, and encouraged his team members.

When talking about Del Sr.’s legacy, it is impossible not to mention his tight-knit family. With six children, 15 grandchildren, and five siblings, family played a central role in his life. When he wasn’t working, traveling, or being active, Del was with his family. Today, Del Sr. entrusts the future of the company to his capable and dedicated sons, Del Jr., Brian, and Kevin.

Throughout my 30+ year career I have mostly worked for family-owned businesses. I have been blessed to have some wonderful bosses that over the years have become “family” to me. Family…. That’s what I think of when I remember Del. Regardless, if he was talking about his personal family or his UCI family, he ALWAYS beamed with pride! He was just easy to talk to and I always enjoyed listening. He had that fatherly presence about him that I felt from my first day here. He asked for people’s thoughts, he listened, and he truly cared. I’m confident Del is looking upon all of us, smiling and sending positive vibes or maybe he’s just laughing at us while we attempt to navigate each day.

From the first time I met him while working for him in Indianapolis, he became a friend that I’d look forward to seeing. We found a common interest in firearms and classic cars, and he would often bring in targets from his latest range outing to show off his marksmanship prowess. Although he was approachable and very personable, there was no doubt that he was a very professional man with high standards and that attitude reflected in everything he was involved in. He was a great mentor who offered sage advice freely and often and had a genuine interest in helping those around him become successful. I'll miss his visits, his jokes, and his advice, but will forever remember his friendship and the profound impact he had on my life personally and that of my family.

In Memory of Delbert Mecum Sr., we remember a man who left a lasting legacy in our community. His belief in family, both blood and chosen, made our workplace a true family. We honor a mentor and friend whose legacy will endure through the strength and love he shared with us. I will miss his visits to the office with Riley and Louie, where he encouraged us to find joy in what we do and to always have fun on the job.
